"A Day in the World"

On May 15, Photographers all over the globe will take part in the single biggest documentary photo project ever!  I would like to invite all of you to be a part of history.  This project was started by a Swedish-based non profit foundation called Expressions of Humankind.  It (the project) seeks to document the differences in life as we know it today, all over the world.  Talk about getting a little perspective!  I think it will be very inspiring to see how the rest of the world lives and how we can continue to grow together in human likeness despite our vast cultural differences.   Its founder, Swedish photographer Jeppe Wikstrom, sees it as the antidote to the countless barrage of celebrity and natural disaster photo's that continue to shape the "virtual" world that we live in today.  Now it is our chance to show the media what life is REALLY like and to let the rest of the world know that our reality is full of everyday people doing everyday things.  Participants will be encouraged to tie their photos to three broad themes:  home, work, and connections.  Each theme contains subcategories to further categorize your work.  You can register in advance at www.aday.org .  Each photographer will be able to submit 10 photos in whatever category they wish.  This is a rare opportunity to come together as visual artists and share "life" as we know it, not as the media sells it to us.  I am looking forward to seeing your work soon.

Here are a few "possible" entries:

Sometimes you have to experiment and see what happens, other times, your kids inability to sit still may just spark some creativity in you.  Either way, the results are interesting. . .

The Wedding Photographer's Worries ?

Here's a great article for all you Wedding Photographer's out there that I found HERE

The article discusses how photographer's need to be creative in changing times.  With the rise of digital photography, the competition is tougher than ever for photographer's who make their living by selling prints online after the wedding.  Every guest has a phone with a camera that will rival any point and shoot.  Besides that, every point and shoot will fit in your pocket and this makes cameras more accessible than ever.  More than ever, wedding guests are supplying for "free" the images that the photographer would traditionally supply and are even able to get some shots that the pro's are not able to get simply because the are several hundred guests, all with cameras, and only one or two pro's circulating around the reception.  To make matters worse, many times, brides and grooms will place disposable cameras on the tables of the reception hall encouraging guests to take candid shots of their day.  How is the poor wedding photographer supposed to compete with the advances in technology that are seemingly taking food from their plates?  As the old saying goes, if you can't beat them, join them...  What if the photographer left the cameras on the table as part of the package offered for the bride and groom?  Then, after the reception, the photographer would collect the cameras and still be able to control the image use and distribution for sale.
For those of you that are on the ball, you might be thinking, "Hey, wait a minute, aren't there some legal issues here?  Isn't the person who shoots the image the one with the rights to the image?"  The answer is Yes, yes, and yes!  But click HERE. to read what Victor S. Perlman, Esq. has to say about it and if you should consider adding this to your wedding day package.

Times Remembered. . .

Today I had the opportunity to spend quality time with my in-laws and my parents.  While snapping a few stills during the visit, I could not help but pause before shooting the picture seen below and think about how special grandparents are in my childrens' lives.  Below is a picture of my daughter and my father sharing a special moment in time. . . Although I'm not sure what they were talking about, the looks they were sharing allowed me to view memories being made right in front of me... and for that, I am forever grateful . . .
